Every basho, I create a chart that tracks the popularity of the basho on Reddit.com/r/sumo, as measured by the number of daily discussion thread comments. I made one again for the Haru Basho 2019, which includes the popularity of the Kyushu Basho 2018 and the Hatsu Basho 2019. Click here to see a full-sized image of the chart!
Of course, this basho was nowhere near as popular as the Hatsu Basho 2019, which peaked around Kisenosato’s retirement, but it was a little more popular than the Kyushu Basho 2019. I think that the sumo subreddit may be growing, as I do not believe that this basho had anything more dramatic than the Kyushu Basho 2019. In fact, it may have had a little less to offer, despite the greater number of discussion comments.
In is also interesting the see the predictable trends in the basho popularity. People comment frequently for the days 1 through 6, calm down for days 7 through 10, increase their comments on days 11 through 14, and then peak on day 15 – unless the basho was decided well in advance. Neat!
