I just saw in a series of tweets by Inside Sport Japan (@InsideSportJP) that the Sumo World Championships 2019 are moving from Hawaii, USA to Osaka, Japan. I still don't know the reason, but I am sure that more information will come out in the near future. Natsu Basho 2019 Results – Musashikuni Mamu
I had high hopes for Musashikuni in the Natsu Basho 2019, and I predicted that he would finish with a 5-2 record. Unfortunately, this was one of my worst predictions, and he ended up finishing with a 3-4 record. Believe it or not, this is his third 3-4 record in a row. What can a... Continue Reading →

Every basho, I create a chart that tracks the popularity of the basho on Reddit.com/r/sumo, as measured by the number of daily discussion thread comments. Since becoming a moderator for the subreddit, I can now see the number of unique visitors and page views for the subreddit. Below are five charts that illustrate the popularity... Continue Reading →
Helen Delpopolo And Ed Sutkowski on CNN – Trump, WWE, and Sumo Wrestling
I assumed that NorthAmericanSumo.com would get a little extra traffic with President Donald Trump attending the final day of the Natsu Basho 2019, but I saw a very large and sudden spike this morning. I looked at the search terms that drew people to the website and, to my surprise, noticed that almost all of... Continue Reading →
Natsu Basho 2019 Results – Wakaichirō Ken
I might change my name to Nostradamus, because my prediction for Wakaichirō was correct! I predicted that he would finish with a 5-2 record, and he indeed finished with a 5-2 record. I will say, however, that I did not foresee the manner in which he would finish with a 5-2 record. Wakaichirō started the... Continue Reading →
Mid-Natsu Basho 2019 Update on Musashikuni and Wakaichirō
We are almost halfway through the Nastu Basho 2019! In the makuuchi division, the top competitors have certainly been Kakuryu and Tochinoshin, but the biggest story has probably been Enho. Can the mighty mini-rikishi continue his hot streak to complete his first basho in the top division? Or has it only been beginner's luck? In... Continue Reading →
Preview of North American Sumo Wrestlers in the Natsu Basho 2019 – Musashikuni and Wakaichirō
The Natsu Basho 2019 is now up in the air! After Hakuho announced that he would be sitting this one out, it is anyone's game to get the yusho. It seems that the favorites are the other yokozuna, Kakuryu, as well as the current ozeki, Goeido, Takayasu, and Takakeisho; however, it seems that a lot... Continue Reading →
Fitcon2019 Sumo Cup – Results
For weeks beforehand, I had been hearing rumblings that Kelly Gneiting was organizing a sumo tournament to gather some of the best amateur sumo wrestlers from around America - and even the world - to take place sometime between the US Sumo Open and the World Sumo Championships. I got to say, it seems that... Continue Reading →
Musashikuni Mamu in the Kyūshū Basho 2013
Today's post is a review of Musashikuni Mamu's performance in the Kyūshū Basho 2013. I could only find video for three of the seven matches, so this post doesn't give a full perspective of Musashikuni's performance in this basho. Nevertheless, I still enjoy making gifs of these early matches, and thereby this post may contribute... Continue Reading →
Wakaichirō Ken in the Haru Basho 2017
This week, I decided to create more gifs of Wakaichirō's prior matches. I find it interesting to review his early performances, but I also find it oddly relaxing to make these gifs. There is a little bit of zen to be found in going back through these old basho. In this post, I provide gifs... Continue Reading →
