The World Sumo Championships are coming up on October 12-13 in Osaka, Japan. Team USA’s representative in the openweight division will be Robert Fuimaono, who won gold at the US Sumo Nationals 2019 to earn his spot. Robert typically competes in heavyweight, but Roy Sims edged him out in an amazing best of three series at Nationals – which came down to the very last match. Nevertheless, Robert was able to bounce back in the openweight division, win gold, and punch his ticket to Worlds. He is one of our most competitive wrestlers possible in the openweight division, and I – along with everyone else – am very excited to see him compete.
Robert sat down with us for an interview, where he discusses his tough performance at Nationals, breaking his hand before the US Sumo Open, and his preparation for Worlds. He also discusses his favorite opponents, getting new people into sumo, and a lot more. He is quite the ambassador for sumo, and it was wonderful to chat with him.
